Vote: Thelma Khupe – Zimbabwe
Mabuyani Mose! Salibonani! My name is Thelma Sibusisiwe Khupe, your representative for the beautiful land between the Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers, home to one of the seven natural wonders of the world- or as you might know it as, Zimbabwe. I am a budding Barrister, 17 years old and currently studying at A levels at sixth form. In a society where we often constantly surrounded by particular beauty standards, the internalised racism and self-belittlement among are young black and African girls is becoming more and more of an issue. Some are left feeling insignificant, or that their blackness is not beautiful enough. But “black skin is not a badge of shame; it is a symbol of national greatness”! The need for empowerment within the community of young African women is vital as self-confidence is part of what makes us grow into strong young women.
Becoming Miss teen Africa would provide me with the platform to educate and inform people of such issues, and would also allow me to encourage and positively influence young girls like me. It would give me the opportunity to withdraw negative preconceptions of Africa and African young women by recognizing the achievements of our brothers and sisters and appreciating the beauty that lies within our culture and history.
I strongly believe that we should ‘Be the change we want to see in the world’ and this is what I intend to do.
