Boni Adeliyi – Nigeria
I am contest number 1 and I am so excited to be representing my beautiful country Nigeria!! When I heard I was a finalist for Miss Teen Africa I was obviously very happy because there were so many beautiful and passionate girls but also I felt honoured to be able to represent my country and my continent.
I’ve wanted to be an actress since I was little john in my primary school production of Robin Hood. Acting is something im so in love with because you are telling other peoples truths through more than just words. Im currently on a gap year working and auditioning for drama school. I also love singing, baking and reading.
I’m not the only contestant representing Nigeria but I dont think it should be just about competing for the ‘pride of your country’ because the western world doesnt always care about the difference, its not uncommon for people to refer to Africa as a country!!! A lot of the time we are labelled as ‘Black African’ and nobody cares to dig deeper and see the difference in your own particular country and culture. So I believe it is important to always represent Africa as a whole, embracing our combined beauty and culture but also the challenges we face and how we want to work to overcome them to make a better environment for everyone, without compromising our uniqueness and culture. Hence why I have chosen to advocate against FGC (Female Genital Cutting) It is a problem that affects approximately 28 countries in Africa, and having had meetings with FGC charities I believe it is so important to have a holistic approach to this cultural tradition which negatively affects so many young girls and women and that is something I want to be involved in. As I said before I am so excited and honoured to be a part of this amazing platform, I hope I can inspire and encourage other young girls to see that there is beauty in African heritage and we should wholeheartedly embrace it.
